How a famous collector chooses works of art – The criterion of “Oh my God!”

Only a select and lucky few can admire even a few of the countless treasures of the Ronald S. Lauder collection.

One of the largest private collections in the world – which includes everything from Greco-Roman sculptures to 20th-century German and Austrian art – is owned by collector Ronald S. Lauder.

Only a select and lucky few can admire even a few of the innumerable treasures of Lauder’s collection.

But now, for the first time, the house, along with the famous collector’s vast art collection, is being opened to the general public – even… platonically.

Neue Galerie New York has represented through an installation Lauder’s residence and collection, naturally with his approval.

It is the first time that Lauder is giving the art-loving public the opportunity to enjoy – until February 13 – his entire collection as displayed in his home, in honor of the New York gallery’s 20 years.

In a video prepared as an introduction to the exhibit, Lauder explains that he has three categories of art: “Oh,” “Oh my,” and “Oh my God!”;

He only collects works from the last category, that is, when he sees an object or painting and exclaims “oh my god!”.

As he says, consequently, “it is impossible for me to choose a favorite work from my collection. When I love a piece of art and decide to own it, I don’t lose my love for it. I’m just becoming more aware of it.”
