Steven Spielberg: ‘The Dark Knight’ movie was badly ignored by the Academy of Oscars in the past

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ are among the ten contenders for the top prize

Steven Spielberg is “encouraged” that two blockbusters have finally won recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and are nominated for Best Picture Oscars, but thinks it should have happened “years ago” with The Dark Knight (The Dark Knight).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards, with “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” among the ten contenders for the top prize.

Steven Spielberg with the Golden Globe Award-winning film ‘The Fabelmans’ is also in the running for an Oscar in that category.

The American director and producer in his statements to Deadline referred to the fact that the films of Joseph Kosinski and James Cameron are on the list of candidates.

“I’m really encouraged by it,” Spielberg said. “But it came late for the film that should have been nominated years ago, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight,” he observed.

“It’s the kind of film that would surely win a Best Picture nomination today, so the presence of the two blockbusters in the top ten list is something we should all celebrate,” he noted.

Nolan’s Batman movie starring Christian Bale as the superhero and the late Heath Ledger as “The Joker” earned a total of eight nominations at the 2009 Academy Awards. It eventually won two, Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger’s performance and Best Richard King Award Winning Sound Editing.

However, it was shut out of the Best Picture nomination, with Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” winning the Oscar.
