Tribute to one of cinema’s leading and most influential cinematographers
In collaboration with the Goethe Institute of Athens, the Athens International Film Festival – Premiere Nights organizes a unique evening dedicated to Michael Ballhaus, one of cinema’s leading and most influential cinematographers, with the screening of two of his legendary collaborations with Reiner Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese respectively.
The screenings will take place on Wednesday 1 February (at 19.30 and 22.00) at the Goethe Institute, with free admission.
During a long career that began in his native Germany and triumphantly reached Hollywood, Michael Ballhaus collaborated with many acclaimed directors (among them Francis Ford Coppola for “Dracula”, James L. Brooks for ” Circuit’, Robert Redford for ‘Quiz Show’ and Mike Nichols for ‘Working Girl’).
His artistic stamp remained indelible, however, on the work of two greatest creators: Rainer Werner Fassbinder, with whom they made 15 films, and Martin Scorsese, with whom they collaborated on seven
Paying tribute to Michael Ballhaus, the two scheduled screenings host the rare “Martha,” which he considers his best work with Fassbinder, and “After Midnight,” the stunning start to his long collaboration with Scorsese. The films will be prefaced by Loukas Katsikas, Artistic Director of the Athens International Film Festival – Premiere Nights.
First come first served. Both films are suitable for viewers over the age of 16.
