Lúcia, mother of soccer player Daniel Alves, 39, met this Thursday (26) with the lawyers who take care of her son’s defense. He has been in prison since January 20 accused of sexually abusing a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona on New Year’s Eve.
According to the newspaper La Vanguardia, the player’s mother left the meeting with the lawyers visibly shaken and did not want to speak to the press. Questioned by journalists if she believed in her son’s innocence, Lúcia nodded her head several times confirming that she did.
After Alves’ arrest, the family hired the famous lawyer Cristóbal Martell, who has defended Neymar and Lionel Messi. He, who is famous in Spain for signing extrajudicial agreements, will share the player’s defense with Miraida Puente Wilson.
Alves was held in pre-trial detention without the possibility of bail by a judge in Barcelona’s City of Justice after a woman accused him of sexual abuse. The player also gave testimony, but contradicted himself by saying, now, that he had a consensual relationship with the alleged victim. Earlier, he had said that he had not touched her.
The player was taken on January 20 to the Brians prison, on the northwest outskirts of Barcelona. The daily El Periódico de Catalunya confirmed that Alves shares a cell with a former bodyguard of soccer star Ronaldinho. According to the newspaper, the detainee is named Coutinho, he is Brazilian and is serving a sentence for sexual assault.
With Coutinho, the player shares a cell with a bunk bed, bathroom and shower. The two often play ludo, a classic board game, and the older one teaches the newcomer the internal rules of the prison.
In the courtyard, Alves has been talking to other prisoners and giving autographs, according to a convict who was released on Wednesday (25) after serving 14 years in prison.
The man, who was interviewed by a team from the Telecinco channel, said that he had not been in the same module as the Brazilian, but that it was not difficult to get an autograph in the courtyard.
