“The Last of Us” proves that it is not too early for a series that will remind us of the pandemic

by

The series — based on a video game series of the same name — follows Joel 20 years after a fungal pandemic has taken over the world

In 2003, Joel (Pedro Pascal) wakes up on his birthday like every morning, sitting at the breakfast table with his 12-year-old daughter Sarah. At the end of the day, the world as Joel—and everyone else—knows it has changed.

The Last of Us is HBO’s latest addition after a string of successful options such as The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, Euphoria and Succession).

The series — based on a video game series of the same name — follows Joel 20 years after a fungal pandemic has taken over the world as he tries to find his brother and get 14-year-old Ellie to safety.

Regarding;
As a “post-apocalyptic drama,” The Last of Us follows Joel as he tries to escort Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from Boston to Colorado. Ellie and Joel live in the America of 2023, 20 years after the Cordyceps brain infection – a fungal virus that essentially turns people into zombies – has taken hold. Those who survived the outbreak are just trying to stay alive in a pretty sad version of America, not optimistic that anything is going to change.

What is The Last of Us based on?
The series may be new to TV viewers, but video game fans are already familiar with the title and story. The Last of Us is based on a 2013 video game series of the same name. It was created by developer Naughty Dog and published by Sony Entertainment.

Who stars in The Last of Us?
Part of what makes the show so great is its cast. Next to Pedro Pascal, who is known for The Mandalorian, Narcos and Game of Thrones, is relatively new to the scene, Bella Ramsey. Game of Thrones fans will recognize Lady Lyanna Mormont.

In addition to the main cast, the series hosts several more familiar faces who will appear among the ruins and zombies as Joel, Tara and Ellie travel across the United States. Some familiar faces include Melanie Lynskey, Nick Offerman, Murray Bartlett and Storm Reid of White Lotus and Euphoria, respectively.

The show’s first season has already received rave reviews from critics (and a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes!), and many say the show is paving the way for more video game adaptations.

As critic James Poniewozik wrote for the New York Times, “It should come as no surprise that a drama based on a video game can have heart. A great, smart game depends on personal connection.”

At its core, The Last of Us is about us, in addition to video gamers, who have gone through three years of a global pandemic. The series delicately handles themes of isolation, the need for connection and the impact of family loss.
