The capital of Epirus will become your favorite winter destination for all the right reasons

Whether your destination is somewhere else and you’re passing through or you’re here to take a short break from your routine, one thing is certain: Metsovo is that place whose special energy will win you over from the first moment.

Just 50 km from the city of Ioannina, the capital of Epirus is high on the list of preferences for winter excursion lovers for all the right reasons.

Its authentic culinary identity, stone buildings with wooden elements – main characteristics of continental architecture – and its unparalleled natural beauty, will create that feeling of intimacy that has smell, taste and an unpretentious calm.

If your road brings you to Metsovo, even for a few hours, these are some of the main places you should find and the flavors you should try. Until next time…

In the Averofio Garden for a breathtaking view

Wherever you want to be in the village, it is better to prefer walking. In this way you will be able to spot every beauty that Metsovo hides. A few meters above the central square, your eyes will see one of the most beautiful mountain scenery that Epirus has to offer.

The Averofeios Garden with its intense flora, has in its center the holy church of Agios Georgios and is surrounded by wooden benches with a view of the snow-capped mountains of Pindos.

Guided tour and wine tasting at the historic “Katogi Averof”

Next stop, the historical winery “Katogi Averof”, built in the 1950s by Evangelos Averof-Tositsa. During the three-minute tour you will visit the cellars where the production takes place, you will pass over the glass bridge between oak barrels of French origin and you will learn everything about the winery that first brought the Sauvignon variety to Greece.

At the end, you can taste the labels you want in their impressively designed space for wine tastings.

Learning the story…

But if you want to learn even more about how Metsovo developed over the decades, at the Folklore Museum you will come across images and objects from another era. Weapons of the 21st century, looms and rich collections, will take you on a journey through time, giving you moments of emotion. Each visit is accompanied by a corresponding tour.

Incomparable local flavors

Surely you have in mind the famous Epirotian pies. Try traditional cheese pie, vegetable pie or mushroom pie baked in the wood-fired oven, in one of the small family shops that you will find walking through the streets of the village. At “Gnision” which belongs to the Tositsa Foundation, you will taste the famous Metsovone, Metsovela, Galotiri cheeses as well as the traditional cured meats of Metsovo.

For coffee at “Metsovorama” and food at “5F”

For a break between your tours, choose to enjoy your coffee with a view of the snow-capped mountains of Pindos. At “Metsovorama”, located just 5 minutes from the main square, you will find a wide variety of hot drinks, sitting next to the stove.

If so many tests have whetted your appetite, try the meats on the menu of the family tavern “Ta 5F”, which is famous for its handmade kontosouvli and everything is served in parchment paper.

Extra tip: If you are a fan of winter sports and time is on your side, don’t miss going to the Anilio Ski Center for skiing, snowboarding, sledding and snowmobiling.
