The Oscar-winning director once again expressed his distaste for this type of cinema
Oscar-winning director, Alejandro Gonzales Iñárritudoesn’t have the best opinion of superhero movies.
Alejandro González Iñárritu once again expressed his distaste for this particular genre of cinema at the recent BAFTA Tea Party, organized by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.
Calling superheroes “sad figures,” Iñárritu said, “I see heroes every day. I see beautiful people going through really, really difficult situations and doing incredible things. And those are the people I kind of relate to. But these kind of heroes with superpowers, do we really need that?”
In 2014, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s statements about superhero movies received widespread publicity.
The director called them “cultural genocide” on the occasion of the release of his film “Birdman or (the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”, a dark comedy about a former superhero film trilogy star (Michael Keaton) who tries to revive his career, trying to get a play on Broadway. The film “Birdman” won several Oscars, including Best Picture.
