by

The performance highlights the greatness of the Macedonian soldier, through the vision created for him by Aristotle’s teaching

A show that deals with his greatness Of Alexander the Great through the dreams of his teacher, Aristotle, is presented at the British Library in London on February 2, 3 and 4, as part of the ongoing four-month tribute to the Macedonian soldier.

It is a production that unites internationally renowned artists – the music is composed by Stamatis Spanoudakis, Aristotle is embodied by award-winning British actor Peter MarinkerAlexander the Great by the well-known Welsh actor Jack Parry-Jones, known from The Crown and Moon Dog.

The digital scenographic director is the famous British artist Paul Benny, the direction is by Dai Sherlock, while the arrangement and production is by Elizabeth Filippouli.

The event is held under its auspices Greek Embassy in the United Kingdom.

The Greek ambassador Ioannis Raptakis said: “The personalities of Alexander the Great and Aristotle remain unalterably timeless. Thousands of books, paintings, writings, scholars, intellectuals, are still dealing with Alexander the Great and Aristotle, perhaps the leading Greek figures of world culture and world wisdom. The teacher guides the student in his explorations. The remarkable actors ensure the success of this pioneering show”.

In this specific adaptation, the central figure is that of the teacher of the soldier hero, the philosopher Aristotle. He, through his dreams, gives new dimensions to his student’s global explorations. Thus, between fantasy, philosophy and history, the viewer is invited to think about the idea of greatness through a different lens.

Elizabeth Filippouli’s adaptation relies on the philosophy and work of psychoanalyst Carl Jung on the importance of exploring the human subconscious through dreams, but also on the deep human need to find answers to our existence.

As she notes: “The Alexander the Great that we present here, at the end of his life, discovers that what gave his life the greatest value is the wealth of knowledge and the diversity of cultures he encountered. This arrangement challenges us to redefine the idea of greatness”.

Stamatis Spanoudakis says: “I wrote my Alexander in 1995 and I am very happy as a composer and as a Greek that my music inspired by our sweet Macedonian king still implies that he “lives and reigns”. In the safest and noblest museum in the world. In our hearts”.

For the director of the show Dai Sherlock it is “a true story that we tell as a dream but also a challenge for our times and for humanity – that’s theatre”.

One of the main pillars of this project are Paul Benny’s paintings, which compose an impressive digital scenery, uniquely capturing the human journey through eternity.

The performance is based on a contemporary epic poem by Stamatis Filippoulis, a Greek journalist and writer.
