Arkudorema: The unknown village in the Peloponnese that has been “swallowed” by nature (video)

by

The heroic Arkudorema is well hidden in the lush vegetation, at an altitude of 1200 meters in a ravine

At an altitude of 1200 meters, 4 kilometers from Chrysovitsi of Arcadia, in a ravine on Mount Mainalo lies Arkudorema – a paleohistoric village of Arcadia that flourished in the revolution of 1821 and remains uninhabited since the beginning of the century – it is estimated that it was inhabited until 1930 .

During the Turkish occupation it flourished due to the inaccessibility of the location and had become an important center of theft.

It is said that since 1530, the Kolokotronei had settled there, as well as in the neighboring village of Limbovisi, and that both of these villages strongly resisted the recovery of the Peloponnese from the Turks in 1715.

In the census carried out by Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1829, the village had 814 inhabitants. In 1851 under King Otto there were 454 and in 1897 under King George I only 33.

As after the revolution it was no longer necessary to stay in such an inaccessible area, at the beginning of the century the village was abandoned and ruined, as its few inhabitants settled mainly in the plains of Messinia.

Today only ruins have been saved, while the only building is the old church of the Assumption (1719).

Folklore

The folk song called “table” (of backgammon) in many villages of Messinia and Arcadia remained characteristic:

The sun is shining in the mountains

it also shines in the valleys

they also shine in Arkudorema

the Kolokotronei…
