Concerts will be held in several Italian cities, with proceeds going to the Italian government

A series of concerts to raise money to buy the Italian opera composer’s residence, Giuseppe Verdiwill take place until mid-June, reports the “Guardian”.

The concerts will be held in several Italian cities with the proceeds going to the Italian government to purchase the detached residence which will be auctioned off with an estimated starting bid of €30 million. The government, which intends to use it as a museum, can allocate 20 million euros from the 2023 budget.

The villa where the great composer lived for 50 years is located in the Sant’Agata di Vilanova area, near the town of Busceto where he was born. Initially, his parents lived there, before he moved in with his second wife, Giuseppe Strepponi, in 1851, and remained until his death in 1901.

The residence had passed into the possession of four siblings, descendants of Maria Filomena Verdi, the composer’s younger cousin, whom they raised as their own daughter.

After a 20-year dispute by the heirs and since no one was able to buy the other’s share the supreme court of the land decided that it should be sold.
