American actor, producer and director thanked Clive Davis for mentoring Whitney Houston
Kevin Costner praised music producer Clive Davis at the music industry legend’s annual pre-Grammy Awards gala at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
The American actor, producer and director thanked Clive Davis for mentoring Whitney Houston, working together on the 1992 film ‘The Bodyguard’ and for the hit of her song ‘I Will Always Love You’ .
Costner’s speech about Davis was about the long, storied career of the music industry executive, but also about the two’s personal relationship.
Whitney Houston died the night of Davis’ pre-Grammy gala in 2012.
“None of us could ultimately protect your beloved Whitney, but your fingerprints on her life are clear my friend,” said Kevin Costner. “You were a miracle in her life. Thank you for being her bodyguard, Clive,” he added, according to Variety.
“It may surprise you, but I don’t know Clive as well as most of you in this room. At first glance we didn’t have much in common. We definitely had a few things in common without knowing it. We both loved music. I can’t dance very well and he can’t dance at all. And we were both impressed by Whitney the first time we saw her. Their journey towards each other began the day Lawrence Kasdan gave me the script for ‘The Bodyguard’ and the day Clive signed Whitney Houston. Whitney was our common point,” the actor emphasized in his speech.
Noting that “I Will Always Love You” was a number one worldwide before the film opened in theaters, he noted that thanks to David Foster’s musical direction and “the voice that came out of that little body that night in the studio, we have a performance of life”.
“Clive is not just a man of his time, but, perhaps more importantly, a man who changed the time in which he lived. He did it by listening. He did it by believing in himself and believing in the special gifts that his artists were gifted with,” Kevin Costner said.
