Harry and Megan could lose their huge deal with Spotify, worth 18 18 million, as they have so far only created one 35-minute podcast.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed the record deal in December 2020, which led their fans to expect a steady stream of content from the couple.
But Ian Penman, a media lawyer who specializes in music streaming contracts, told the Express that the podcast may have been less popular than the couple and Spotify originally expected.
In a statement, he said: “It would not be unfair to assume that perhaps their popularity was not as great as they initially felt or Spotify.”
Penman said the streaming giant probably paid the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a small down payment and retained the right to withdraw from the total of 18 18 million if the first episode was not popular.
He said: “It is a common case in music deals, it goes back decades, that when people talk about a big deal, like Robbie Williams signing a 15 15m deal or something, it does not mean he gets 15 15m first day”.
