Honda launched the car of the future today. The reason for the Honda e, the new electric model of the Japanese brand, which is a fresh idea, but at the same time it is a special, fashionable, with a simple design philosophy and technologically perfect car.
The Honda e clearly states its character and takes the car one step further, as a few years ago if we saw this model at the shows, we would assume it is original. Instead, today it is a production model, designed from white paper, on a new platform, offering urban mobility solutions.
Honda designers wanted to challenge with its appearance, taking several elements from the company’s older cars and managed to connect the past with the future in this way. It is a city car with a length of 3.9 meters and roots from the original Urban EV of 2017. Full of ingenuity, it has been plugged in and declares “present” in the era of mobility and electrification. With retro aesthetics, it has no mirrors but cameras on the outside, it comes in a very special color, it has no handles that are visible, but it is hidden, it has an electrically open glass lid on the hood to charge and characteristic LED lights front and rear.
In its passage it makes everyone’s eyes turn, as it does not go unnoticed. It is ideal for urban travel, it is dynamic and sleek, but with autonomy that does not allow long distances if the driver has not expected to charge its batteries, which are 35.5KWh. With an autonomy that during our test reached 170 kilometers (210 are given by the manufacturers) it is oriented to the movement within the urban fabric of cities. However, with prudent use, and with an average energy consumption close to 16KWh, it can theoretically reach close to 200 km of autonomy.
Both the base version of 136 hp and the version of 154 hp with 315 Nm of torque, give excellent performance to the small car, while one of the positive elements is its acceleration.
Inside you will find things that you do not easily find in other cars. Five screens cover the dashboard from end to end, with the two extreme ones playing the role of exterior mirrors, projecting images from the cameras and the street. Although it may seem difficult to adapt to such a car, it does take less time to get used to. At the same time the central mirror with the push of a button becomes a camera that transmits the image from a central reversing camera, thus expanding the driver’s field of vision. An 8.8 “TFT instrument display in front of the driver displays basic vehicle information such as power and charge status, selected driving profile and safety system details.
Low on the dashboard are ports for connecting and charging devices, including an HDMI type, a 12V DC supply, and 2 + 2 USB ports for front and rear passengers. The center console offers flexible storage space, under the charging and interconnecting ports, including a drawer cupboard, as well as a pocket holder for a mobile phone. The spaces are proportional to the car, as we should not forget that we are dealing with a city car. The storage space is 171 liters, which can be considered small, if we calculate that there is also the bag with the charging cables, which takes up a lot of space.
Charging the battery in a 2.3 kW household AC charger takes just over 18 hours, while in a 7.4 kW public AC charger the time drops to 4.1 hours. In a 100 kW DC charger, the relative time is limited to 30 minutes as the useful charging power is limited to around 70 kW for reasons related to battery protection.
During the test drive we found that it has a fast, light and accurate steering wheel that “cuts” in the city. The ideal weight distribution between the two axles (50/50), the low center of gravity and the suspensions located at the four corners of the model unfold its sporty character, but at the same time make it ideal for city travel. Rear-wheel drive increases the mood for gaming, but driver assistance systems do not allow for errors and the potential gaming disposition of the driver is limited to the typical. Even at high speeds the model is stable and tight, up to 145km / h which is its final speed. The basic version of 136 hp costs 30,186 euros, while the larger version of Advance of 154 hp is priced at 34,274 euros with the subsidy.
