David Bowie’s handwritten lyrics have sold at auction for £57,000 (almost €64,500).

The lyrics to the song “Jean Genie” were written on a sheet of paper and given to a die-hard fan in the 1970s.

David Bowie, who died in January 2016 aged 69, released the song in 1972 and it was the first on his album ‘Aladdin Sane’.

The song tells the story of Jean Genie who “sneaked out of town” and reached number two in the UK Official Chart.

The singer had given the manuscript to the founder of his New York fan club, Neil Peters, the BBC reported.

Now, the lyrics have been sold by auction house Omega Auctions for £57,000.

The previous owner of the manuscript, the auction house’s Dan Hamson said, decided to sell it after learning that the lyrics to Bowie’s hit ‘Starman’ sold for £203,500 in 2022.
