“Drowned” in greenery, pines and cypresses, the Island (of Ali Pasha as it is known) impresses the visitor with its nostalgic aura and its history
With history, traditions and legends surrounding it, the island in the heart of Lake Pamvotis, which “nourishes everything”, is a unique point of reference for the city of Ioannina and Epirus.
The Island (the Ottoman conquerors called it Kiafir Adasi, i.e. Island of the Infidels) is known for the tragic end of Ali Pasha, inside a cell of the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon.
The visitor today “relives” history, at the Ali Pasha and Revolutionary Period Museum with its unique exhibits.
The city of Ioannina is only 10 minutes away from the Island. The boats below the Castle come and go from morning to night, to serve the islanders, but also the visitors.
The traditional preserved settlement and the monasteries of the Island
“Drowned” in greenery, pines and cypresses, the Island impresses at first glance. As the boat approaches behind the reeds of the Lake, houses and their yards can be seen reaching down to the water.
Its settlement is picturesque, preserved, with its main characteristic being the continental architecture. The courtyards of the stone-built houses are always flowered and whitewashed.
There are no cars on the island. Those residents who have them park them on the opposite coast of Drabadova, which is only 200 meters from their “island”, and reach their homes in small private boats.
As soon as the boat docks, the visitor receives the first “sweet” welcome. On the uphill cobblestone path to the square, he will taste the traditional sweets offered by the businessmen.
The eye immediately falls on the showcases with the creations of Ioannito silversmiths, but also on the taverns that present the local delicacies, such as frog legs, crayfish pasta and grilled fish from the lake.
Historical Monasteries have stood next to the houses for centuries. Monuments of Orthodoxy, which highlight it in a great holy place.
The square is dominated by the parish church of the Dormition of the Virgin, while a little further on the small church of Agios Eleftherios.
According to historical research, on the western side of the Island, the Philanthropinos and Stratigopoulos families, around the end of the 13th century, founded the catholicon of two Monasteries dedicated to Agios Nikolaos.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, other monasteries were founded, such as that of Agios Ioannis the Forerunner by the Apsarades brothers, of the Transfiguration of the Savior, of Eleusis, of Agios Panteleimonos and of the Prophet Elias.
