The 5th and last part, on Saturday 11 February at 17.45, on SKAI
On Saturday, February 11, the Happy Traveller completes his journey in the neighboring country, Albania, continuing his journey in the southern part of the country, in the region also known as Northern Epirus.
Eutychis and Elektra start from Examili, the famous summer tourist resort with heavenly beaches and the emerald waters, at the southern tip of Albania just across from Corfu.
They get into a boat to explore the small islands of the area and go for a swim in the so-called “Jamaica” island with its idyllic “double” beach. They visit one of the most important archaeological sites in Albania, Vuthroto, the ancient city with its Hellenistic, Roman, Ottoman and Venetian past.
They pass by Mursi village, the southernmost village of the Greek minority zone in Albania, located almost three kilometers from the border with Greece.
Then they head north again, hitting the road to Argyrokastro and en route stopping at southern Albania’s most popular natural attraction, the Blue Eye with its mysterious eddying underground springs.
The water there is crystal clear and very icy, as they find out with the first dive. Their journey continues in the historic Argyrokastro with its emblematic castle and the fairytale old town with its imposing mansions. They go to the ruins of ancient Antigoneia, an ancient city built by King Pyrrhus in honor of his wife Antigone and later destroyed by the Romans.
In the heart of the valley of the river Drinos, they also meet the beautiful amphitheater of ancient Adrianople, a Roman city that was built on the site of the ancient Drynopolis or Dryinoupolis, from which the municipality of Dropolis takes its name, which is the second recognized municipality in Albania with a Greek minority.
In the Municipality of Dropolis, they visit Dervitsani where they talk with locals and go to Vanista, where they enter a very mysterious cave, called “Skoteini”. They walk on a beautiful stone arched bridge of continental architecture from 1820, visit some more villages in the area, and make a stop to see the monument to the Greek fallen of 1940 in the village of Vouliarates.
At the endthey drive to the customs office of Kakavia from where they return back to Greece, having the best impressions of the trip to Albania, in a beautiful, welcoming and very interesting travel place.
