Built in 1962 for the American composer Russell Garcia, it is considered one of the most important mid-century buildings in Los Angeles
Resting on V-shaped posts at Hollywood Hills, Los Angelesthe Garcia House, also known as the Rainbow House, the jewel of modernism created by Californian architect John Lautner is available for purchase for $16 million.
Built in 1962 for the American composer Russell Garcia, it is considered one of the most important mid-century buildings in Los Angeles. Suspended at a height of approximately 18 meters from the ground, despite undergoing significant changes by the Marmol Radziner office in 2002, it retains Lautner’s design character.
In addition to its iconic roof, Lautner’s masterpiece features timeless elements; among them, a lava stone entryway, original patio flooring, and a massive “wall” of windows. Resting on thin pillars, it seems to defy the law of gravity. Floor-to-ceiling openings offer panoramic views of Los Angeles, flooding the interior with sunlight.
Winding down the hill leads users through greenery designed by landscape architect John Sharp to a pool shaped like an almond eye. They added the impressive swimming pool in 2008, following the shape of the parabolic roof that is Rainbow House’s trademark.
