The Russian writer Alexander Green wrote “Purple Shrouds” in 1923. It is one of the most popular novels in Russian literature, which this year marks 100 years since it was written and has been published since 24
February and for 14 performances at the Kallirrois Theater adapted and directed by Danai Roussos.

Two children, Assol and Grey, travel the path to adulthood and romantic awakening until they meet in fulfillment of a prophecy and a shared destiny. The heroes move on a path from the prosaic reality to the dream.

Through the parallel narratives of Assol, played by Stephanie Kapetanidis at a young age, and in the video by Olia Lazaridou and Gray, played by Constantis Mizaras and Manolis Mavromatakis respectively, we follow the lives of the two children as they are destined by fate , a role played by
Kyriakos Weaver.

The show, clothed in symbolism and elements of a fairy tale, incorporates life-sized dolls, where the actors in a double role of puppeteer – actor, play the multiple age phases of man and delicately run through the souls of the heroes.

“The story of the purple sails began that day when, thanks to the influence of the sun, I saw the sea sail red, almost purple.” — Alexander Green

Director’s note by Danai Roussos

Assol (al sol) means sun.
The sun rises and sets in a perpetual motion, every day.
There will always be a sea to cross and always this distance will be a miracle; which happens a little fatally and at the same time, challenges our will to conquer it. Like all miracles, it happens with the same simplicity that one finds a hand and decides to hold it in one’s own. You don’t need a miracle to live
to dress heroically, rather than just to believe.

The sun rises and sets in a perpetual motion, every day. And that in itself is a miracle. All you have to do is look up and see it. The performance is dedicated to the woman on whose head the birds sit. When I was little, he used to make paper boats for me. To my mother.

“We must perform the so-called miracles ourselves”
— Alexander Green
