The archaeologists of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki continue the tours of visitors to monuments and archeological sites – landmarks of Thessaloniki that determine its physiognomy, through the cycles of Sunday Walks that take place on the first Sunday of each month until June 2022.
As part of the Sunday Walks – through which visitors have the opportunity to get to know aspects of the city and its history through visits to monuments and archeological sites of Thessaloniki – on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 11:30 there will be a walk in the Macedonian tomb of Finikas, in Pylea.
In the meantime, the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Thessaloniki continues the online action “Stories of the city”, presenting twice a month short stories, short stories about areas, monuments and individual finds of Thessaloniki, in order to illuminate unknown aspects of history and course of the city in space and time.
In January, the stories “Tomb of a young woman with gold jewelry from the cemetery of Stavroupoli” and “S. Rosi. An Italian painter in the Rotunda “. The first story will be published on Friday, January 14, 2022 and concerns a tomb found on Lagada Street near the Public Psychiatric Hospital and containing the remains of a girl, three vases and many gold jewelry dating to the middle of the 3rd century BC.
The second story, which will be presented on Friday, January 28, 2022, refers to S. Rosi, who renovated the Rotunda’s decorative decoration in 1888-1889, while the monument was functioning as a mosque. His work, although for the data of the time contributed significantly to the tidiness of the decoration of the monument, was badly criticized due to inappropriate painting interventions on the mosaics.
