Neymar honors Marília Mendonça after scoring in France: ‘His eternal fan’

by

Neymar, 29, paid tribute to Marília Mendonça, who died at age 26 in a plane crash last Friday (5). It was right after the striker scored a goal for his team, Paris Saint Germain, in a match against Bordeaux this Saturday (6) for the French championship.

The player lifted his team shirt and showed a message written on the shirt underneath. “I will be your eternal fan, queen of suffering,” it read. The phrase was complemented with the expression “RIP MM”, an acronym which in English means “rest in peace”.

The artist was a friend of the ace and, in 2019, she appeared unexpectedly on his birthday to sing “Happy Birthday”, making him emotional. Neymar also lamented the singer’s death on his social networks. “I refuse to believe, I refuse,” he wrote.

Mendonça was one of five victims of a plane accident that fell into a mountain range in Piedade de Caratinga, a city 309 kilometers from Belo Horizonte. The singer had a concert scheduled for tonight in Caratinga, about ten kilometers from the accident site.

At the time of the accident, around 4 pm, Mendonça’s press office had informed that the singer had been rescued alive. Around 6pm, however, he confirmed his death.

Firefighters also confirmed the death of the singer’s producer, Henrique Ribeiro, and his uncle, Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho, in addition to the pilot and co-pilot of the aircraft.

The aircraft crashed near a waterfall while trying to make a forced landing, according to the Military Police. According to the captain of the state agency, Jefferson Luiz Ribeiro, initial information is that the aircraft’s pilot had problems landing at the airport, which is about two kilometers from the accident site.
