Don’t Look Up: The new Netflix movie is reminiscent of a Facebook meme, rather than a political satire

by

A quick glance at the media is enough to realize the division that Don’t Look Up has caused since its release on Netflix. Adam McKay’s new film may have immediately garnered the most viewers in just a few days, but it continues to be criticized for its “unbearable lightness”.

The good moments of Don’t Look Up
The aim of the film is to satirize the present with an analogy between a comet and the climate crisis. Two scientists discover that the planet will be destroyed in about 5-6 months. From there on, a special story unfolds that sometimes reminds of satire and sometimes a bad farce. The film very aptly highlights the distrust of the media and the public towards the scientific community. The same is true of how he portrays American politics. Listening to the destruction of the world, no one takes the initiative, except when it is too late. And of course, the motivation for whatever action is taken is to win or win the election.

In fact, perhaps more successful than satire is the choice of Jennifer Lawrence with Timothée Chalamet. From their first scene together, the two have an excellent chemistry that lasts until the end of the film. The same goes for the appearance of Ariana Grande, who impersonates a caricature of herself. After all, who among us would not go to an Ariana Grande concert if we knew that the world would be ruined in a few days?

The failures of Don’t Look Up
A Meryl Streep at its not-so-best, a Birkin bag and an extremely arrogant Cate Blanchett make up the field of opponents. The film tries to show what happens when politicians and the media take advantage of their power and influence, thus influencing the public. In satire, exaggeration in quite a few jokes is legitimate, however it can sometimes disorient the viewers. The bad humor that tried to become political but never reached such a point is also what makes you not not look up, but not even look at the movie.

America in such cases is the best case study for dealing with crises. But this time, when the issue was so serious, Adam McKay needed a little more audacity to touch on his reality. The satire he created is only a few steps away from parody and from becoming unbearable. Don’t Look Up, then, becomes the favorite movie of those who love great metaphors, similes and proportions. The rest need to search very well to find something positive in the whole affair.
