Under a large-scale installation by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, Dior’s AW23 collection took place inside a purpose-built structure in the Jardin des Tuileries, Paris. At 24 meters long and seven meters high, the installation was called ‘Valkyrie Miss Dior’ and was entirely handcrafted.

The one-ton installation was spread out inside the structure: undulating volumes extended over the catwalk and at various points fell like tears to the floor; the fabrics used for its surface were drawn from the collection of Maria Grazia Chiuri, the creative director of the women’s collection of the house.

“Incorporating 20 different fabrics from the collection, it comes into dialogue with the models as well as the audience, like a choreography,” said Vasconcelos. “It celebrates the dialogue between human bodies, the inhabited garment and the present space. Between haute couture and visual arts”.

The collection was a tribute, among others, to Catherine Dior, Christian Dior’s sister, who was a member of the French Resistance and dedicated much of her life to growing and selling flowers as a message of hope.
