Actor Leonardo DiCaprio handed a sustainability award to the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards, an event focused on fashion and the environment that preceded the 2023 Oscars.

At the award ceremony, DiCaprio, UN (United Nations Organization) messenger for climate change, called Guajajara a heroic guardian of the planet and said that re:wild, the environmental organization founded by him, will act in collaboration with the minister and the Lula government. for the implementation of environmental priorities in Brazil.

“Minister Guajajara has been a staunch environmental activist in the face of serious threats to indigenous peoples,” said the actor.

He cited the indigenous population of 900,000 people in Brazil and the diverse cultures that exist in the country.

DiCaprio highlighted that re:wild launched the Amazon Forest Fund in 2019 to deepen the partnership with indigenous defenders, including Sonia Guajajara.

The minister was awarded for defending the rights of forests and for helping to place indigenous peoples at the center of the global climate agenda.
