Skrillex: DJ and producer who replaces Drake at Lollapalloza spent 2022 in depression

Chosen to replace rapper Drake on the closing night of Lollapalloza, this Sunday (26), Skrillex is a DJ and electronic music producer with 15 Grammy nominations, eight statuettes won, and a Brazilian friend: the funk artist Ludmilla.

At the age of 36, Californian Skrillex —Sonny John Moore on his ID card—, is considered one of the forerunners of dubstep, but his fans tend to get irritated when they associate him exclusively with this genre, as he has partnered with k-pop artists to rock. With Justin Bieber, for example, he created a duo project, Jack Ü, which Diplo was also part of. As a producer or co-producer, he has also worked with Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and Lil Pump, among others.

He was the guitarist and vocalist of the hardcore band From First to Last between 2003 and 2007, when he decided to pursue a solo career and change his artistic name: until then he went by Twipz. His career began to take off and in 2011 he founded his own record label, OWSLA. That same year, Skrillex raped at the Grammys. Long hair shaved on the side was one of his trademarks and he was also successful with singer Ellie Goulding, with whom he dated and was a professional partner. After ten years of producing and working around the clock, Skrillex is gone in 2022. He hasn’t released any music. He disappeared.

When he returned, he reappeared with shaved hair, a bun and a beard. She sought to mark a new phase, one of reconstruction and rebirth, after living “the worst year” of her life. Depressed and missing her mother, who had died not long ago, she closed herself off.

“People ask why ‘I left’ or ‘dropped’. Rightfully so, 2022 was kind of my tipping point. I had to put everything on the fridge, especially my projects. I resolved to work on myself, and for the first time in years ago, I found a new sense of peace,” he said in an interview at the time.

With his mental health apparently recovered, Skrillex spent the last few days in São Paulo. He performed at a nightclub, went to the launch party for Ludmilla’s new album, and is enjoying life. And then there’s Lollapalooza…
