Stathis Kalyvas, a professor of political science at Oxford, also spoke to Sia Kosioni about the mini-documentary series “Disasters and Triumphs” that will be shown from today at 21:00 on SKAI.
It is a journey into the past, through seven great historical circles of our history that share common elements: ambitious plans, great disasters but also impressive triumphs, from the outbreak of the Greek Revolution and the outbreak of the unprecedented economic crisis to the great successes.
As he said, when he wrote his book it was an attempt to understand why what we saw around us was happening in those gloomy days. “Along the way I was really surprised, because I discovered that in addition to the great disasters, there are also very important successes that were not so well known. So I wanted to put an emphasis on this side that we ignore and understand how disasters are linked to successes. “This version that you will see in the documentary does not treat us as victims of history, but as creators of our own destiny”, pointed out Mr. Kalyvas.
He stressed that ambition is what leads to both disasters and triumphs. “When our ambition lags behind in terms of our capabilities, it easily leads to disasters. But because ambition is so great it eventually leads us to triumphs. In other words, in relation to the size of our country, we have an unusual ambition and that is why the disasters we are going through are attracting worldwide attention. And we see this from the Greek revolution until the recent crisis. “This is not a coincidence,” added the Oxford professor.
Regarding the transfer of his book to television, he explained that the targeting was threefold. “It was to make a series that has scientific validity on the one hand, that is aesthetically perfect on the other and also has an exciting plot. “We did not want to make something that was boring, encyclopedic, heavy,” he concluded.
It is noted that the documentary will be broadcast every Thursday and Friday at 21:00 on SKAI.
