A sleeveless jumpsuit decorated with bioplastic sequins made from vegetable cellulose presented by the British fashion house Stella McCartney. The sequins were created by biomaterials company Radiant Matter as an alternative to petroleum-based options on the market that may contain harmful carcinogenic chemicals.
“Radiant Matter works on solutions that are healthy for the planet without compromising on aesthetics,” company founder Elissa Brunato told Dezeen.
Each BioSequin disc shape is made from recyclable cellulose – which is a polymer – that has been harvested from trees. Its characteristics make it naturally reflect light and make the sequins sparkle. In contrast, traditional plastic sequins are often coated or finished with synthetic, toxic or fine metal parts to achieve their sparkle.

Brunato referred to the suit as “the world’s first garment made from Radiant Matter’s BioSequins” and hopes it will highlight the prospects of BioSequins. “As this is the first ever prototype, a lot of care and thought went into its construction and design,” he stressed.
