Less than a month after leaving the air in “Mar do Sertão”, José de Abreu, 77, is already scheduled for Globoplay’s new production, “Guerreiros do Sol”. Written by George Moura and Sergio Goldenberg, the telenovela is expected to premiere in the second half of 2023 and in the coming weeks the production and cast preparation phases will begin. The actor said in an interview that, despite feeling valued in the market, he thought last year of switching from acting to politics, but president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was against the idea.
“My idea was to stop for four years to help Lula rebuild the country. He was against it and said that I didn’t need to be in the Chamber for that. But I was determined”, began Abreu. He also discovered that if elected the possibility of returning to acting would be minimal.
“There is a clause compliance in many companies, mainly multinationals, which establishes a quarantine to hire people who have held political office. They call it politically exposed persons. With that, I could have gone up to eight years without acting. That would mean the end of my career,” he told the newspaper O Globo.
A declared opponent of former President Jair Bolsonaro, José de Abreu said that in the last four years he has suffered constant attacks, but since the end of last year, with Lula’s victory, the situation has improved. “The other day I went to the doctor and decided to take a test. I walked from Ipanema to Leblon (in the South Zone of Rio) and everything went smoothly. So I decided to sit outside a bar. Two people came up to me and asked to take a picture. The air is more breathable. Bolsonaristas are more suspicious. They started to see that Brazil has laws, especially after January 8.”
José de Abreu even gave a small spoiler about his character in “Warriors of the Sun”. He will play a widowed farmer who is interested in a younger woman from a humble background. The actress who will play the actor’s partner will be Isadora Cruz.
