It has caused strong reactions in Egypt the trailer for the dramatized Netflix documentary dedicated to the Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, as it presents her as colored despite the historical references and depictions, but also the fact that she belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty which was founded by Ptolemy I’ Sotira, general of Alexander the Great.

In this context, Egyptians started a campaign on the change.org platform, with a request to Netflix to cancel the screening of the documentary.

“Cancel ‘Queen Cleopatra’ on Netflix for Falsifying History” is the slogan, with Egyptians calling on Greeks to digitally co-sign. So far, the request has been signed over 80,000 people, with a target of 150,000.

The text of the request in detail

“Afrocentrism is a pseudoscience that pushes one group’s agenda to claim Egypt’s history and rob the real Egyptians of it. Using false texts and zero evidence, they are still trying to falsify history.”

»Cleopatra was born in Alexandria, Egypt in the Ptolemaic dynasty of Greek origin. She was NOT black. This is in no way anti-black, and is simply a wake-up call to preserve the history and integrity of the Egyptians and Greeks. The show is clearly made to court the Afrocentric movement, which claims to be the master of ancient Egyptian culture, and to establish what the movement promotes. Egypt was never BLACK and it was never WHITE, Egypt is just Egypt. There are many great African/Black civilizations, but Egypt was/is NOT one of them. Sign the petition to stop the falsification of history!”

However, those responsible for the creation of the request make it clear that “it is a call for the truth” and has nothing to do with racism or nationalism.
