Piece of the cross of Jesus will be used in coronation of Charles 3rd; understand

A ceremonial silver cross with fragments of wood that the Vatican says came from the cross used to crucify Jesus Christ has been blessed in the UK on Wednesday. The artifact will be used at the coronation of King Charles III next month.

Pope Francis presented the two fragments of the “Vera Cruz”, one with 5 millimeters and the other with 1 centimetre, for the coronation of the monarch and his wife, Camila, on May 6, in London. These pieces were shaped into a small cross and incorporated into the overall design, visible through a pink crystal gem.

The Archbishop of Wales, Andrew John, also blessed the new Cross of Wales before dignitaries and the faithful at a service held in Llandudno, in the north of the country. The artifact will be transported to London to lead the coronation procession. The cross “speaks to our Christian faith, our heritage, our resources and our commitment to sustainability,” the archbishop said.

“We are also delighted that its first use is to guide Their Majesties to Westminster Abbey for the coronation service,” he added. Charles presented the Cross of Wales to the Anglican Church of Wales on the occasion of its centenary.

Designer Michael Lloyd took two years to make it, using recycled silver ingots and fragments of Welsh wood and slate. After the coronation, the cross will be shared by the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches of Wales.

Charles himself applied the king’s mark of authenticity – a leopard’s head – to the cross’s silver elements last year in London.
