Johnny Marr widely considered one of the most important guitarists in alternative rock. As a tribute to the guitar, the musical instrument that brought him to prominence, his new book Marr’s Guitars, out on October 17, is a tribute to some of his most legendary strings.

Photographed by Pat Graham, Marr’s Guitars showcases the Smiths musician’s most notable acoustic and electric guitars, along with intimate details about the career moments and milestones associated with them. “Guitars have been my life’s obsession,” Johnny Marr said in a statement. “It was a mission and sometimes a lifeline.”

Some of the artist’s important guitars are Signature Fender Jaguar, Gibson ES-355 and Rickenbacker 330. Famous musicians also gave him their guitars, Brian Ferry a Hagstrom, Nile Rodgers a Stratocaster and Bert Jans a Yamaha.

Also included in the book are stories about the guitars Marr gave to other musicians, who then used them to write some of their own hits. For example, Noel Gallagher wrote ‘Wonderwall’ with one of Marr’s old Stratocasters, while Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien used Marr’s Gibson Les Paul Goldtop on ‘In Rainbows’.
