The first reaction is shock. Then some bad thoughts come to the surface. Then comes the time to stop, understand the situation, think about the possibilities and face reality. This was the path traced by singer Simony, who in August last year, aged 46, discovered that she had bowel cancer.
“This questioning of my faith and ‘why me?’ I never was. The only fear was when I read that I had the disease and I didn’t know if there was metastasis, that is, if it was spread throughout the body. After exams, I understood my condition and I was much calmer”, she says in conversation with the F5.
Despite the quick understanding, the process was painful and led the artist to even consider passing custody of her youngest son, Anthony, 9, to her mother. “And it was very important to have a doctor who gives you strength on this journey. I had two paths: either I thought about death or I faced it and saw a light. The desire to be close to my children led me to the second option”, he says.
This whole experience was portrayed in an e-book format that Simony recently released: “One Day at a Time – The Reality Behind a Diagnosis”, where she tells details of her journey in search of a cure. It is still not possible to decree that the singer is completely free of the disease, as she still needs to undergo some tests in the coming months, but her life goes on as usual without sequelae or major disorders.
“That has given new meaning to everything in me. Today, whenever I wake up, it’s the most important day of my life. I don’t make long plans or anything thanks, my only obligation is to be happy. I spend more time with my family”, he decrees.
From now on, Simony has the will to be an increasingly active voice in the alert for early diagnosis and in the fight to help more people with cancer to have a dignified treatment. According to her, part of the profits from the sales of the e-book goes to the Instituto Vencer o Câncer. “It became a mission and I am engaged in this process.”
Another way to help is through the word. The singer reveals that she has plans to give talks throughout Brazil about what she has lived to add to the lives of those in need. “I am very happy to be able to save someone’s life or even to inspire women to wear wigs or go bald. The messages I receive are worth everything.”
