Meghan Markle sent a letter to King Charles III to talk about the prejudices she experienced from the British royal family before she and Prince Harry abdicated ties, claims the British newspaper The Telegraph. The correspondence would have been sent after the interview in which the former actress and the Duke of Sussex spoke about the royal concern about the skin tone of Archie, the couple’s first child.
In March 2021, the two told American presenter Oprah Winfrey that there were “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin would be when he was born”. According to the Duchess, the family held these conversations with Harry, who reported them to Meghan – she did not reveal those involved.
The newspaper says the letter was sent as a response to King Charles, who had contacted Meghan to express concern about rising tensions in the family, and that he was the only royal who sent a message after the interview.
The outlet also reports that the Duchess allegedly named the person who made the comments about Archie and that she told her father-in-law that she wanted to discuss unconscious racial prejudice.
Despite attempts at dialogue, relations at the British court remain unfriendly. Prince Harry goes unaccompanied by Meghan to Charles’s coronation, which will formalize him as king after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The event will take place on May 7 and will feature Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Andrea Bocelli.
