Diane von Furstenberg the influential fashion designer who popularized the women’s dress will be the subject of a new documentary on Hulu. Sharmeen Obaid Shinoy, an Oscar winner for the short films “Saving Face” and “A Girl in the River,” is directing the film alongside Trish Dalton, according to Variety.

The release date and title of the feature documentary will be announced at a later date. Through archival footage and personal interviews, the film brings to light details of the life and career of the fashion designer, who forged her own path in a male-dominated industry and built a multi-million dollar fashion empire.

Born in Belgium to Holocaust survivors, she began designing womenswear around 1970, about a year after her marriage to Prince Egon von Furstenberg. They divorced in 1983 and she later moved to New York, where her company’s flagship is still located.

Von Furstenberg’s creations have been worn by Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow. In the description of the documentary, the 76-year-old fashion designer is described as a “true legend” and it is emphasized that “through sheer determination, she overcame every challenge that came her way, including sexism, the dangers of immigration to America, the ups and downs of the industry, a public divorce and a battle with cancer”.

“Over the past 50 years, she has triumphed, shattered glass ceilings and opened doors for women everywhere… all while living life on her own terms. We hope this story inspires the next generation,” Obaid-Shinoy and Dalton said.
