Kardamili still has its ancient name and is a place of natural beauty
In the cinematic Kardamili of Messinia – where the movie Before Midnight with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy was filmed – the visitor is enchanted by the beauty of both the small and picturesque town and the natural beauty of the area.
The coastal village, which is 38 km from Kalamata and combines on one side the calm waters of the Messinian Gulf and on the other the imposing mountain mass of Taygetos.
Kardamyli has a long history that reaches back to prehistoric times.
However, few know that – according to Homer’s Iliad – Kardamyli was the first of the “seven favored and well-populated cities” that Agamemnon would give Achilles as a dowry if he married one of his daughters.
Later it was called “Skardamula”, while in recent years its ancient name prevailed again.
Kardamyli has been characterized by the Ministry of Culture as a landscape of special natural beauty because it is a remarkable natural landscape with rich vegetation in which characteristic examples of the evolution of the Maniac residence are included.
It has also been characterized as a historical landscape, due to the importance it has for the history of architecture and in general for Greek history.
