In The Tourist, an Irish man is suddenly in Australia
This “suddenly” is what the series is trying to clarify through its 6 episodes. Jamie Dornan, as a stranger among strangers, wakes up one day in an Australian hospital. He was found there after someone tried to kill him with a truck. When he wakes up, he does not remember his name, any of his details, or why he is in Australia. His Irish accent is the only obvious evidence of his identity. He thus decides to seek the truth and, above all, to escape from those who want him dead.
Things get complicated when a man who is buried alive calls the hero to find him. Throughout the series, the hero does not get a name, but is another man. On his way to discovering the truth he meets many people who sometimes want to harm him and sometimes to help him.
The series does not follow any particularly original recipe
You have seen heroes with amnesia in unknown countries, people being chased and men buried alive. However, The Tourist promises to give you a very unexpected plot twist in the end.
Perhaps most important is the depiction of the search for a person’s identity. The hero does not remember who he is, if he has hurt anyone and why they are chasing him. Inwardly, however, he considers himself a victim in the whole affair and often seems to question himself. What happens when one finally realizes that he is the “bad guy” in the case? Does it really matter what we do and not what we think we are? The series seems to want to create questions of this nature to every viewer, while unraveling one of the most well-established mysteries we have seen lately.
