Sheeran’s docu-series premiered Wednesday
The impressive musical career of Ed Sheeran it has put him in the pop star category which the singer doesn’t understand. In conversation with Gayle King at the premiere of the Disney+ documentary, “Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All”the singer said he always focused on working harder than everyone else, rather than trying to sell himself or his image.
“You describe yourself as a species [με] ginger hair that stutters,” King said, referring to how Sheeran describes his appearance in the documentary. “This guy doesn’t become a pop star, but you do.” “Were you always this cute?” King asked him.
“I feel like if you take away the guitar and the songs, then nobody cares,” Sheeran replied. He then joked about how “celebrities sell perfume” and asked King: “Would you buy my perfume?”
“I would buy your hair product,” she replied, to which Sheeran said, “No, you wouldn’t.”
Sheeran’s docu-series, which premiered Wednesday, aims to shine a light on previously unknown aspects of the singer’s life, including his wife Cheri Seaborn’s cancer diagnosis and the death of his best friend Jamal Edwards.
“I never wanted to make a documentary where I looked like a ‘sad pop star’ and people felt sorry for me. And what I think is really great about the documentary is the themes that it explores, which are things that everyone is going through. Everyone goes through the fear of illness in the family. Everyone goes through grief. Everyone goes through ups and downs in their mental health.”
And he added: “I think it’s more humane. I think that’s the thing about this documentary is that people watch it and when they see how I react, they don’t go, “Oh, I feel sorry for Ed because Ed is sad.” They watch it and relate it to their own lives.”
