‘Charmed’ actress linked baby loss to punishment for past miscarriages

Alyssa Milano, 48, says that when she suffered a spontaneous pregnancy loss, she felt like it was a punishment for her previous abortions. “I definitely had this moment of, ‘Well, I’m basically being punished for abortions in my 20s,'” the actress said in an interview with People’s Me Becoming Mom podcast this Friday.

“I didn’t notice it at the time. It took me a while in therapy to realize that this was something I was putting on myself,” recalled the actress, known for her roles in the series “Charmed” and the feature “Young Witches”. She also said that this feeling was transferred when she managed to get pregnant again.

“The way I interacted or was with my kids — and I think that’s common — but I always felt like, ‘What if something happens to these two little beings I love so much?’ and ‘is there a world where they’re taking them away from me for any karmic resolution needed to happen?'” said Milano, who is the mother of Milo Thomas, 10, and Elizabella Dylan, 7, from the union with talent agent David Bugliari, 40.

In 2019, the actress had already talked about her own personal experience with abortion in an episode of her podcast, Alyssa Milano: Sorry Not Sorry. She said she underwent the procedure twice, both in 1993, a few months apart, when she was about 20 years old.

“At that time I knew I wasn’t ready to be a mother, so I chose to have an abortion. I chose. It was my choice. And it was absolutely the right option for me,” she explained at the time, adding, “It wasn’t an easy choice. It wasn’t an easy choice. something I wanted but it was something I needed.

“It was devastating,” added Milano. “I was raised Catholic and was suddenly brought up in conflict with my faith. A faith that, I was beginning to realize, only enabled men to make all the decisions about what was allowed or forbidden.”

Although she continued to use birth control methods, she learned a few months after the first procedure that she was pregnant again. Once again, Milano had her pregnancy terminated. “I did what I knew how to do to avoid pregnancy and I was still pregnant, so once again I made the right decision to terminate the pregnancy,” she said.

Milano said he didn’t regret his decisions: “I wouldn’t have my beautiful, perfect, loving, kind, and inquisitive kids who have a mother who was very, very ready for them. I wouldn’t have my career. I wouldn’t have the skill or platform. which I use to fight oppression with all my heart. I would never have met my wonderful husband David, whose constant and immeasurable love for me sustains me in these terrible times,” he concluded at the time.
