Libya: Mangos’ thriller raises concerns over Paris conference |

by

The political “thriller” in Libya over the sudden “beheading” of the country’s Foreign Minister, Nila Al Mangous, has caused concern.

Mangous was ousted by the presidency, but the country’s caretaker Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeiba, has said he’s still in office and that he’s sole responsibility for the governing body.

These developments raise concerns about the International Conference on Libya to be held on November 12 in Paris by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as the leaders of Cyprus and Israel, will participate in the summit for the first time, while he has ruled out Turkey.

Ms. Mangous was the person who would represent Libya at the Conference, and any ratification of its opening would complicate the landscape. Analysts believe that Mangous’s removal was precisely intended to prevent him from attending the crucial conference. Besides being “decapitated” from the position of Foreign Minister, she has been banned from leaving the country.

Libya at the center of Dendia’s visit to Italy

The case will focus on the contacts that Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias will have tomorrow in Rome with his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio. They will discuss the Mangos issue as well as the overall situation in Libya and the removal of foreign troops and mercenaries in order for the elections scheduled for December to run smoothly.

During his visit to Italy, Mr. Dendias will exchange with his Italian counterpart the instruments of ratification of the Greece-Italy EEZ delimitation agreement, while they will also discuss the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
