Former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant accused of sexual harassment by production assistant

by

Darius Jeremy Pierce, best known for playing drag queen Shangela on RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2010, is being accused of sexual harassment and rape by a former producer he worked with. The case would have occurred on February 25, 2020.

Daniel McGarrigle alleges in a lawsuit obtained by the American newspaper Deadline and which is ongoing in the Superior Court of Los Angeles, United States, that the alleged assault occurred after a closing party at work in the hotel room where Darius was staying. He claims Pierce bought him several drinks — two drinks and five small shots — even after being told that Daniel didn’t drink often.

After feeling sick due to alcohol, Pierce would have suggested that Daniel lay in his bed. In the middle of the night, the whistleblower claims he woke up with the actor on his lower body and trying to have forced intercourse. Disoriented and weak, he tried to stop and would have repeated “no” several times, but the alleged aggression continued.

Daniel says he didn’t talk about what happened at the time because he was afraid of losing his job because Pierce was his supervisor, but that he tried to maintain a cordial relationship, even with constant touching and flirting. He asked to quit his job in July 2021.

In a statement sent to Deadline, Pierce denied the allegations. “They are personally offensive and perpetuate harmful stereotypes not only for me, but for my entire community.” Represented by an attorney in San Diego, McGarrigle sought unspecified punitive damages, attorney fees and other compensation.
