Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd tired of being The Weeknd. Abel Makkonen Tesfaye has been performing under the stage name Tesfaye since 2009, has won four Grammy Awards and sold over 75 million records along the way.

In a new interview with W Magazine, the artist revealed his plans to ditch the alter-ego after a “last hurray.” “I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter,” the singer said.

“I’m still going to make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still wanna kill The Weeknd. And I will do. After all. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be born again,” he said.

“The album I’m working on right now is probably my last as The Weeknd. This is something I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I could say,” he noted.

The singer appeared in the interview alongside Lily-Rose Depp, with whom he co-stars in Sam Levinson’s upcoming HBO drama The Idol. “Film and television is a new creative force for me,” he said.

The singer has previously spoken about an elaborate plan for his next musical project and hinted at completing a trilogy that includes 2020’s ‘After Hours’ album and last year’s ‘Dawn FM’.
