Eduardo Suplicy, 81, attended Rita Lee’s wake this Wednesday (10), in São Paulo. On social media, the state deputy (PT-SP) explained why he went to say goodbye to the singer who, still alive, wrote that politicians would not be present. Rita died on the night of this Monday (8), at her home, aged 75, after fighting lung cancer since 2021.
“Rita made a statement asking politicians not to attend her wake because otherwise she would get up and even curse,” recalled Suplicy in an Instagram post. The deputy referred to the excerpt from “Rita Lee: An Autobiography”, in which the singer “predicted” how the day of her departure would be: “No politician will dare to attend my wake, since I never attended the podium of any them and I would rise from the coffin to boo them”.
But Suplicy believes he would be welcomed by the honoree: “I’m sure that, in my case, Rita would treat me like a friend.” “All my encounters with dear Rita Lee ended with hugs, recorded in beautiful photos that I keep with affection”, recalled the deputy. “In the same way that when I went to her book launch I received her hug so affectionately, I will try to hug her today”, he added.
Famous people from the world of music, television and the arts also attended Rita’s wake at the Planetarium in Ibirapuera Park.
