Away from Globo for three years, Aguinaldo Silva had been working on some personal projects in Lisbon, Portugal, where he has taken up residence since his contract with the Brazilian broadcaster ended. Despite preferring to spread the word that he lived in a “recollection” phase, the author was really immersed in his work and, therefore, he was surprised to learn that his most recent production became news around the world. Aguinaldo is the author of the text and is also the executive producer of a Luso-Brazilian series about a forbidden gay romance in the 17th century between two soldiers.
“Yes. It is true that project “Land of Shadows”. But, I have no idea where this news came from because we are still in negotiation”, he replied to F5 when asked about the report published on the American website Deadline.
Guto Colunga, CEO and founder of the Brazilian production company Diosual Entertainment, which comprises the film division Diosual Pictures Studios and Diosual Television Studios, was the one who revealed details of the series, scheduled for television and which will start shooting in early 2024. “We seek to involve the love between our protagonists in a lyrical scenario that awakens the same empathy in the public as any other story starring a heterosexual couple”, he commented.
The only name confirmed so far in the television production is director Pedro Vasconcelos, who won an International Emmy for the telenovela “Império” (2014), by Globo, also with Aguinaldo Silva. The recordings will take place in Portugal and also in Brazil. While the cast will have Portuguese and Brazilian actors, the series will be entirely filmed in English.
Still untitled in Portuguese, “Land of Shadows” takes place in Olinda, a Brazilian village, during the Captaincy of Pernambuco in 1604 and 1605, and reveals how the equality of soldiers puts them in opposition to the Holy Office of the Inquisition of Portugal. The parallel plots are: persecution of New Christians, abuse against women and the romance between the wife of a sugar cane farmer and one of her slaves.
