The protesters who were arrested were detained and released with an obligation to appear in court at a future date. Protesters called for restaurant workers to be included in raising New York state’s minimum wage to $17 an hour.
Employees in restaurants and tipped businesses are exempt from the increase. Currently, restaurant workers are paid $15 an hour, combining a $10 wage and a tip allowance of no more than $5.
