From “Socrates you superstar” and “Spring” by Sofia Vossou, to SAGAPO and Kalomira, the most loved moments of Greece in the competition
Whoever says that “A little wine, a little sea and my boy”, “Avadi do fa fafa” or the introduction from Sofia Vossou’s Spring has not passed into his DNA, is lying.
In the last 30 years, the Eurovision it was an integral part of the “culture” of the Greek, with the exception of perhaps the last decade which somewhat “deflated” our interest (and rightfully so as the entries we sent were not so… strong).
The crowning glory in the history of Greek participation in the Competition – and out of competition due to position and historicity – was the country’s first in 2005 with Elena Paparizou and “My Number One”, in Kyiv.
Apart from this moment, the Greek Eurovision entries that “marked” us – in the good sense – are many and now classics, regardless of the position they finished.
The maiden representation of Greece in the competition, in 1974, was then undertaken by the “great lady” of Greek song, Marinellawith the famous “Wine, sea and my boy» – Finished 11th (out of a total of fifteen participating countries at the time) but we don’t care at all.
La la la la…
The 1977Greece participated with the classic, romantic Solfège lesson (to the music of Giorgos Hatzinassios) and everyone was trying to learn the movements of Paschal, Bessy, Robert and Marianna.
We got 5th place.
Avadi, do fafafa..
The 1979 Greece sent Hope with “Socrates (you superstar). ¨He came in 8th place. No further comments are needed.
And we move on to the newest story…
In 1984, ERT decided that Eurovision as an event and all the songs were of “low quality” and decided not to send a representation.
In the following years, the Greek participations were “non-existent” in terms of impressiveness and position and did not “write” in our consciousness. Until…
The 1991 in a unique musical moment, goes to Eurovision in Rome Sophia Vossou with Andreas Mikroutsikou and brought the unsurpassed “Spring».
The track came in at number 13 but received rave reviews and little love. Due to the Spring, Greeks began to get serious about Eurovision and the TV viewership every year hit red.
The 1993 Kate Garbi wrote “clothing” history at Eurovision with her now iconic “naked” dress. But we also kept “one of us plays rock and the other chiftetelli” from the chiftetel-piece “Greece country of light».
Typically in the 9th position, highest in our hearts.
In the following years we “bottomed out” in the ratings and finally in 1999 the EBU cut us off as they excluded a number of countries based on the ratings they had accumulated over the last five years in order to reduce the volume of entries.
This shook us quite a bit as after two years, the 2001we sent Antique with the Die For You. That’s how we learned about Elena Paparizou and we came for the first time in 3rd place. Apotheosis!
The next year 2002 SAGAPO of Michalis Rakintzis sank to 17th place. It took many years to appreciate it and understand how “forward” it was… Sorry Michalis!
Say, say, say, say the magic word…SAGARO – SAGAPO.
That 2004Sakis Rouvas – the Greek god who charmed even the winner Ruslana – took third place with Shake It and paved the way for Paparizou’s debut with Number 1, the following year.
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
They followed in 2006 with Everything with Anna Vissi and in 2007 with Hia sou Maria with Sarbel until…
The 2008Kalomiraki rocked the Eurovision stage with its nazi and brio and brought the Secret Combination in third place!
Well, and then as you remember them… nothing worth talking about, that’s why we don’t remember anything, maybe a little Alcohol Is Free in 2013 with the Koza Mostra and the rebbe Agathonas, because of the tzergelos, which also brought us to the poor but not honest 6th place…
With yesterday’s (expected) elimination of Viktoros Vernikos in the second semi-final, let’s go for more…
