The Canadian-American actor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29
Michael J. Fox said she chose to retire from acting after watching Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, among other reasons.
The Canadian-American actor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29. In 1998 he revealed the health problem he was facing, and in 2020 the protagonist of the film series “Back to the Future” announced that he would retire.
In a recent interview with “Empire” magazine, Michael J. Fox explained that his decision to step away from acting was prompted in part by Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The actor said that watching a scene in the film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a no-longer-successful actor and Brad Pitt as his stunt double in 1960s Los Angeles, reminded him of his real-life struggles.
Fox recalled that when he was shooting the series The Good Fightspin-off of the hit series The Good Wifehad trouble remembering his words due to his illness.
“I thought of Once Upon A Time in Hollywood,” Fox said. “There’s a scene where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character can’t remember his words anymore.
“He goes back to his dressing room and screams at himself in the mirror. I lived in the moment, looked in the mirror and thought: “I can’t remember them anymore. So, let’s move on. It was calm.”
In April, the actor – who founded a charity working to find a cure for Parkinson’s – said living with the disease “gets harder” every day.
