Patricia Arquette she’s the kind of actress who can’t go wrong with her choices. She steals the show in every movie and TV series she stars in – so of course we’re excited about her new Apple TV+ series, especially as it’s her chance to reunite with Ben Stiller. And even more so because Kate Ford wrote it. Who can top 2001’s undeniably smash hit, Miss Congeniality?

Set in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, High Desert follows Peggy (Arquette), an addict who decides to make a fresh start after the death of her beloved mother. How; By becoming a private detective, no matter if he doesn’t meet even half of the necessary qualifications.

What follows is a wonderful journey of self-discovery as Peggy does everything in her power to stay clean while solving some crimes.

As she tells her boss, she plans to keep sleeping until – at least – 11am, no matter how many files arrive at her desk – a decision some might describe as lax, but others simply as… boundaries.

High Desert is a well-crafted dark comedy about depression, addiction and self-pity.

The coefficients

Arquette is joined in the series by Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) as Bruce, the man who reluctantly hires Peggy as a private investigator. Rupert Friend (Homeland) is Guru Bob, an anchorman turned desert shaman, while Bernadette Peters (Ally McBeal) takes on the role of Roslyn, Peggy’s mother.

Matt Dillon, Weruche Opia, Kier O’Donnell and Christine Taylor co-star as Peggy’s lover, best friend, brother and sister, respectively.

Speaking about the series to the Los Angeles Daily News, Arquette says, “It’s a farce. It’s a counterculture comedy. It has all these weird characters who are, like, a little lost and make a lot of mistakes… [άρα] there’s a lot of love in it and there’s a lot of family in it too. A lot of people make a lot of stupid decisions that end up making stupid mistakes and there’s chaos everywhere they go.”

High Desert will premiere on Apple TV+ on May 17.
