Which museum will you visit today? The question, although rhetorical, is more than relevant today, Thursday, May 18, when Museums all over the country are celebrating. This date has been established since 1977 as International Museum Day by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), in its effort to highlight their role in modern society. So, museums of all categories open their doors today and, with free admission, invite young and old alike to visit them and take part in their original activities, which in many cases extend over time and other dates.

Guided tours of permanent or periodical exhibitions, concerts, various performances (theatre, music, poetry readings, Shadows, etc.), educational programs, multi-thematic walks, events for people with memory problems or disabilities, workshops for children and/or adults, screenings of films and audio-visual material, speeches, storytelling, awareness-raising events and many more presentations have been included in the actions prepared by the Greek museums on the occasion of International Museum Day 2023, which has the theme “Museums, Sustainability and Quality of Life” (the updated program is available here).

Also, as every year, the Board of Directors of the Greek Department of ICOM chose an honored cultural body, for this year the Vassilis & Elizas Goulandris Foundation, “highly appreciating the scientific, educational and wider cultural work it carries out, as well as its contribution to the promotion of visual arts at a national and international level” , as stated in his announcement. It is noted that the Vassilis & Elizas Goulandris Foundation (Eratosthenous 13, Pagrati) will remain open today until 21:00 with free entry, having prepared a series of specially designed activities for which those interested should have made an online pre-booking.
