The life in the village of earlier decades, when there was a blacksmith and an outdoor shoemaker and a man’s haircut cost 5 drachmas, two women are revived in the Kato Porroia of Serres which paint on the facades of old, abandoned shops their former use. In the area where the hair salon used to operate, there is a painting of women from the 60s getting their hair done, the stand that has been empty for about 10 years is “reopening” and in the grocery store “Afthonia” the shop owner welcomes customers holding the scoop . The bus stop also acquires color with children’s portraits, while the whole village is reflected in the taxi stand!

The initiative for the transformation of the village belongs to two of its women, the Eleni Karafloudi and Kleoniki Zoidouwhich within a few months, with their brushes made those who pass by their place, stop to admire and photograph their creations.

Eleni Karafloudi, who returned to her parents’ village 8 years ago, has a cult, as she tells APE-MPE, of old buildings and history. So, some time ago, together with Ms. Zoidou and the help of the Cultural Association, she decided to breathe life into the empty buildings.

We painted 12 facades, highlighting the old use of shops but also the life of the village in general, in the past decades. The Cultural Association provided us with some paints and craftsmen who helped us in the restoration of the exteriors of the buildings,” says Ms. Karafloudi. Thus, the shops with commercial uses of the past, which have remained closed for years, acquired “windows” where passers-by can see the life they hosted and the village gets yet another added, touristic value.

“There are many people who stop to take pictures, thus advertising Kato Porroia” observes Ms. Karafloudi. He also emphasizes that the village experienced a special boom in the past, with many shops operating in the area to serve its population at the time, while it is indicative that 300 children attended the primary school.

“Now, we are about 400 permanent residents” he clarifies, making it clear that he will continue to paint other buildings as well as enrich the Folklore Museum of the village with old objects he finds.
