Tomorrow is the 31st anniversary of the judge’s murder Giovanni Falcone from Cosa Nostralaunches at Palermo Sicily new museum for the mafia.

The new museum, dedicated to Giovanni Falcone and Judge Paolo Borcellino – murdered by the mafia within 57 days of each other -, is housed in the 18th century neoclassical Palazzo Jung. It comes to complement the already existing one, since 2017 in the Palazzo Gulí No Mafia Memorial and Museum, and will offer access to archive documents, films and photo-loans from other major Italian museums as well as immersive experiences that include smells and sound.

Two other locations are also in the plans: a museum in a historic residence in central Rome, a former confiscated mafia property, and a space in Bolzano for art and design professionals and political and environmental researchers.

The project is headed by Fondazione Falcone founded by Maria Falconesister of the murdered judge, who emphasized in a statement that the foundation’s most recent venture “it will not just be a museum of memory but also a dynamic place where people can come together». Speaking about the museum, Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagala added that “students and young people will be the active protagonists of what we hope will become an interactive, narrative and traveling museum which, beyond bringing our history to other Italian cities, proposes itself as a place of hospitality and reflection for tourists, the world of work, businesses and citizens».

The creation of the museum follows other initiatives of the Fondazione Falcone against the mafia: in 2022, artists such as Andrea Buglisi, Peter Demetz and Velasco Vitali were invited, among others, to create, within the project Spazi Capaci, public art interventions throughout Palermo. “We have always known that culture is one of the best weapons against the mafia“, said Judge Giovanni Falcone.
