In the heart of the forest of Mainalo and just a few kilometers away from the beautiful and picturesque Vytina there was until recently abandoned one of the scariest buildings in Greece. The old Sanatorium of Mana.
THE SANATORIES OF ARKADIA
The Prefecture of Arcadia With its fir-covered mountains had the most suitable natural environment for the operation of sanatoriums. Thus, here there was the operation of three sanatoriums, in the wider area of Vytina and one in Tripoli.
MANA’S SANATORIUM
The Sanatorium of “Mana” near the village of Magouliana in Vytina, is a unique example of hospital architecture, located in a dream location, at an altitude of about 1,500 meters, reminiscent of a Swiss landscape.
The sanatorium was built in 1923 (according to others in 1925) At the initiative and fundraiser of Pavlos Melas’s sister, Anna Papadopoulou -who was known as Mana- for the treatment of the herbal patients of the Dicrasian campaign of 1920-22 and for this reason the sanatorium so named. The building started operating in 1928 and Anna Papadopoulou’s ambition was to make it the Largest Sanatorium in the Balkans.
His transformation into a 5-star hotel
The former “Mana” sanatorium in Mainalo, Arcadia, will be converted into a 5-star hotel.
In one of, perhaps, the worst times for tourism, the owner of the property obtained the building permit for the conversion into a hotel of the former sanatorium “Mana” in Gortynia.
The company Otus hotel, which in May 2015 acquired for an amount of 830,000 euros the old sanatorium “Mana”, located in an area of about seven acres in Mainalo, Arcadia, secured a few days ago, the building permit for the reconstruction of the property and the turning it into a 5-star hotel.
The building is located at “Korfoxylia” at a distance of 3 km from the settlement of Magouliana, at an altitude of 1,300 m in Mainalo.
The former sanatorium is 5 km from the National Road Tripoli – Olympia, 13 km from Vytina, 56 km from Tripoli and 200 km from Athens.
